Live better with optimism
Research shows that optimists reach goals faster than pessimists and make their own luck.
Adopt a more positive attitude with these tips:
- Learn from setbacks. Make “At least I’ve learned” statements. Example: When your computer crashes and you lose hours of work, tell yourself “At least I’ve learned to save more often and prepare back-up files.”
- Look for rainbows. Nip dark thoughts in the bud by denying yourself permission to be negative. Example: If your boss chastises you for missing a deadline, don’t think “I messed up.” Instead, tell yourself “Here’s a good opportunity to show poise under pressure.”
- Count your blessings. Use “downward comparison” to imagine what a truly unfortunate person faces. However bad things get, remind yourself that they could be worse.
